Haven't been able to work on the chainsword in a while. I only get 2 days a week to do any sort of hobby things. Last week one of my days was spent putting in part of a sprinkler system, and the other day of this week, I got hijacked to hang out, go out to eat, go to the movies, etc...
Right now I have the engine part complete and have both side pieces of the blade cut out. One side is glueing and clamped to hell and back. In a few hours after that dries some I will put the other piece on. Should be dry enough to snag a few pictures later on tonight.
Also, if you haven't seen the movie Ink, do yourself a favor and see it. You can watch it free on Hulu.

Quick update
Got some materials in for a banner I am going to make as well as some 2 part silicon rubber molding material to test out. I am thinking of making resin / plastic kits for the chainsword if it becomes popular.
Anyway, my next day off is Sunday, but I won't be working on anything as I will be driving down to Tallahassee to do some job hunting, visit friends and head over to the nearest beach. So, won't be another update until sometime next week.

Construction continues and some terrain
So, did some more sanding on the bulk of the chainsword, long way to go on that with sanding the teeth. Cut out the side pieces and started sanding on those. This is my first time working with MDF and I gotta tell you. It does not have the pleasant wood smell when cutting sanding that most woods do. Maybe because it is basically recycled fiber mashed together?

Any way, pics of the start of the side pieces (more sanding to do) and Some Tyranid terrain I am working on, a digestion pool.

The bulk of it all, just has primer and a base coat on it right now. I have some of that magic water stuff for railroad displays. Going to add some green ink to it to have nice digestive juices in the pit.

Some Rippers ready to empty their biomass into the digestion pool

Couple extra pieces to put in, like Larry here. I don't think he is going to make it. Already down to a stub of an arm and a mostly melted leg.

Construction on final product begins!
So, got the main bulk of the chainsword cut out and side pieces put on. I have some more sanding to do on the teeth and need to trim the side pieces down so everything is flush. So far so good though. I just wish I didn't have one of those normal jobs in a cubicle cell keeping me from working on this today.

Small update
Haven't updated in a while, been getting some OT at work so that is taking up a lot of my time. The foam prototype for the chainsword is done except for the exhaust vent on the side of the engine. Tomorrow I will start on the wood pieces unless I get tied up with family matters. My brother is visiting for the Masters Golf Tournament and may try and spend some time with him.
In non chainsword related news, working on a prop tome for the chaos cultists. Got some leather to bind it with, but thinking instead of sculpting the face of a blue horror or on it something. Also have some Tyranid terrain in the works.
Will have some pics up later tonight.

Chainsword Part 4
Just a couple of pictures. Nothing too special yet, but have the bulk of it together except for the top. Next I will be adding the spikes which I think will allow for a better idea of the end product.
Right now it is just a prototype, end product is going to be made out of wood. This is just to make sure scale is good and get a template made for cutting the wood.
Chainsword Part 3
Going with an overall length of 48", the blade being 30" long.
Right now have some of the pieces glued, have to wait for the glue to dry before I can do anything else at this point. Missed something before I went to glue, just need to cut something out. Waiting for the glue to dry to cut it as not to gunk up my blade.
Now to figure out what the hell to do while the glue dries hah. Hrmm.. I know! A book of some sort. Reading? No... creating a book of EEVILL!!!

Chainsword Part 2
Think I am going to make a base out of foamcore just to get the sides down right. I was thinking wood for my final product, we will see though how bulky it ends up being. For transport, might have to mike it break down into multiple pieces.
Just going to go all out with the 5 ft for the foamcore just to see how intimidating it is hah. I have seen a tutorial to making latex weapons for boffer larps. That might be something to look into more as it would be lighter, and could actually whack people with the thing without having to worry about giving them a concussion.
We will see though, I will probably have another update later on in the day.

Chainsword part 1

So, trying to get a group together some Warhammer 40k costumes. One of the most recognizable things from 40k are the chainswords. Big bulky things of rending destruction that even in a universe of lasers and stupidly high caliber firepower, the soldiers still get into the nitty gritty and lob a few limbs off.
First off just looking at some of the models for reference. I took a look at an Imperial Commissar and a Necromunda Ganger.

As you can see (the light blue lines in the pics are markers). They are almost the size of the person wielding them. I have read that the larger inquisitor models are better for scaling weapons to the user, but I haven't found any photos of one with a chainsword yet.
Right now if I do it to scale as on the models with myself, the total length will be 5ft long. I might scale it down to 4ft just to kill some of the weight and awkwardness since the sword will be carried around in the middle of the huge crowds at Dragon*Con.
Welcome
Just setting up something to help me keep on track with my work, and let other people who are interested take a peek at my work in progress.
